Helicopter Careers
Currently the helicopter industry is encountering a major shortage of
qualified pilots. Many jobs are available in the industry that will utilize
your newly acquired skill.
Now take a look at this website jsfirm.
You will find under the Aviation Job Quick Search a drop
down menu. Locate the Pilot-Rotary Wing search and it will pull up a list
of companies and their minimum hiring requirements.
As you can see, these operations utilize turbine helicopters and require
an abundance of turbine experience in most cases. We have also pulled
an article from the Daily Advertiser which talks about the current shortage
of helicopter pilots: Pilots
In Demand
This article identifies that the need is there, and pilot salaries continue
to rise. In fact, the average starting salary for someone new to the industry
is around $48,000-$55,000 per year in the Offshore Oil Rig Support. Some
Tour operations start their new pilots out at $75,000 to $80,000 per year
with benefits and retirement packages. The key ingredient for you to qualify
for these jobs is the ability to have an abundance of turbine experience.
This is why selecting our Training program is the best choice for your
career.

The key ingredient for you to qualify for these jobs is the ability to

This is why selecting our Training Program is the best
choice for your career. It takes more than just going to flight school,
obtaining your commercial pilot’s license and getting a job. You
will only have between 150 to 170 hours of total flight experience when
you get your commercial license, and most of these jobs require at least
1000 hours of helicopter flight experience with some even requiring 1000
hours of turbine helicopter experience.
Things To Consider
With all careers, there are certain steps you must take to get to where
you want to be. Once you complete your training, you will only have between
150 to 170 hours of total flight experience. In order to become qualified
for a job you will need to build your flight experience so your first
job will have to be as a flight instructor. By teaching other students
what you have learned, you build a wealth of experience. The experience
is gained through repetition. If you perform a task or teach something
over and over again, you will master that skill, and you will be able
to instill this knowledge and skill into your students with confidence.
During this period as a flight instructor, you will be able to log your
hours as Pilot-in-Command. The best part, is that you will no longer have
to pay for flight time, but in fact you will be paid to perform this demanding
and fulfilling task.
You may have also noticed that for most jobs an Instrument Rating (the
ability to fly with no visibility) is very important and sometimes required.
The turbine helicopter experience along with the instrument rating that
you will gain by training at Van Nevel Helicopters Academy will be the
most sought after skill that employers are looking for, and will launch
you into the career that you dream about. The information below identifies the value that
our Professional Pilot Program offers and is intended for the student
who wants to get the best education in the industry and enter the industry
as a highly desirable asset to any helicopter operator.
Our Program
Benefits of our ALL-TURBINE Factory Training program
over the typical path a potential pilot might take:
Our program offers Factory Flight training in Turbine Helicopters from
the very beginning of your training allowing you to start building that
valuable turbine flight experience operators are looking for.
We train you
in our FAA Certified Model 1100 5-seat turbine powered helicopters and
our pricing includes training in external load operations and in elevated
platform approaches.
Most schools
utilize the R-22 Helicopter which requires Flight Instructors to have
200 hours of helicopter flight time under the requirements of a Special
Aviation Regulation before being able to conduct flight instruction. With
our helicopters, you will be able to begin teaching once you attain your
Flight Instructor Rating. This is a tremendous savings in time and money
and allows you to enter in the instructor role in the least amount of
time.
Graduates of
our program will not only attain their certificates and ratings, but will
have the advantage of receiving recognition from having completed FACTORY
training, as well as all experience in Turbine helicopters.
Graduates of
our Professional Pilot Program will have the advantage of being recommended
by their instructor for an employment position to build their flight experience
as an instructor through our Factory Instructor Internship Program (This
is a paid position). Additionally, ALL Factory Interns will receive Certified
Flight Instructor- Instrument Training at NO ADDITIONAL COST. Attaining
this position will weigh heavily in your resume over others who trained
in a traditional flight school environment, because you will be recognized
as a factory trained and authorized Flight Instructor.
Class sizes
are limited to allow students availability of the aircraft to complete
their training in the least amount of time.
As a Factory
Intern Instructor you will be able to build your flight time very quickly
because we maintain a continuous training environment throughout the students
training and take a more professional approach. What is meant by this
is that if you were to go to most other flight schools there is a period
in your training where you will be in “LIMBO” were in order
to get to the next rating there is a lot of solo flights that need to
be done to build your flight time until you meet the flight experience
required for that rating. This allows the student to basically fly or
as some people put it, “Burn holes in the sky” until your
ready for the next stage of training. This usually leads to the student
developing bad habits because there is no one in the aircraft identifying
mistakes that are made during the flight. At our Factory Academy
students
will fly ALL but the required solo flights with an instructor and continue
to develop there proficiency in the helicopter. We want to train you beyond
the “minimums," because you will be Factory pilots representing
us, and flying the best-maintained factory aircraft.
An additional
benefit to this method as a Factory instructor is minimal time to get
to that high paying job. For every student enrolled in the Professional
Pilot Program, Factory instructors will train with that student for 130
hours of flight time. This means that for you to build you flight time
as a Factory Intern Instructor, you will only remain in the training environment
for about 7 students. Realistically you could start your training today
and within 18 to 20 months be working as a Professional Helicopter Pilot.
We use the
most advanced FAA approved Flight Simulators at our Academy. This enhances
student safety and allows training to continue even when flight operations
are not possible due to weather concerns.

Some things to keep in mind:
Many programs
limit ground instruction, so if you need help, you may have to pay an
additional hourly rate for extra ground instruction.
All other training
programs only teach you piston powered helicopters, usually an R-22. If
you want obtain training in turbine helicopters, it costs extra, often
as much as $500 to $1,380 per hour extra.
If you have
already flown as many hours as the FAA requires, and you are not proficient
enough to pass your test, most schools will charge you full retail, by
the hour, until you’re ready. This can add up to thousands of dollars.
Caution!!!!
We understand that for one reason or another, our program may not suit
everyone’s needs. This may be due to the fact that you live in another
state, and can not relocate for our program, you own a house and have
a family with one income and can not take the time out for our program
with out additional income, or any other reason. If you locate another
flight school in your area, keep in mind that no matter how big or small
the flight school is there are only so many students that can be trained
at one time. We urge you to do your research and take the extra time to
evaluate the school.
Obtain legal
advice prior to entering into a contract with any flight school. You may
have to spend $500 for this advice, but it would be better than losing
$30,000 or more because of “deceptive representation.”
Be very cautious
of schools that require you to maintain a certain attendance yet do not
guarantee aircraft or instructor availability.
We at Van Nevel
Helicopters Academy only take on as many students as we can train, and
ensure instructor or aircraft availability during scheduled sessions.
We look forward to seeing you in class, and thank you for allowing
us to serve your career training needs.
